A devastating crash on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation has left one dead and another seriously injured, with a Cut Bank woman now facing the consequences of her actions.
Feather Lynn Stillsmoking, 32, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and assault resulting in serious bodily injury in the fatal vehicle crash that occurred on March 12, 2023, in East Glacier.
According to court documents, Stillsmoking was driving a 2003 Oldsmobile west on US 2 at a high rate of speed when the vehicle crossed the centerline and collided head-on with an eastbound Nissan. The passenger, identified as Robert Johnson, died at the scene due to blunt force injuries. The driver of the Nissan, Jane Doe, suffered serious injuries.
An analysis of Stillsmoking's blood found alcohol, amphetamine, and methamphetamine. Stillsmoking admitted to drinking a fifth of vodka prior to the crash. Investigators determined that the Oldsmobile was traveling at 102 mph five seconds before impact.
The U.S. Attorney's Office is prosecuting the case, which was investigated by the FBI, Blackfeet Law Enforcement Services, Glacier County Sheriff's Office, and Montana Highway Patrol.
Stillsmoking faces a maximum of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. The court will determine the sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. Sentencing was set for May 11, 2023.
Stillsmoking is currently detained pending sentencing.
