Felipe Nevarez, Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine, Colorado 2019

Felipe Nevarez, a 40-year-old man from Alamosa, Colorado, was convicted of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

A federal jury in Denver returned the guilty verdict after a four-day trial. Nevarez was found to have possessed a large bag of methamphetamine on April 3, 2019, in Alamosa County.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Colorado, Nevarez was driving a black BMW when he was encountered by deputies with the Alamosa County Sheriff's Department. At the time, he had several state warrants for his arrest.

Nevarez evaded law enforcement by reversing the BMW at top speed down a rural driveway. He then got out of the car and fled into an open field. After a nearly 45-minute search, law enforcement found Nevarez hiding in the field, within arm's reach of the large bag of methamphetamine.

Nevarez was also found to have over $16,000 in cash on him at the time of his arrest.

The conviction is the result of cooperation among law enforcement agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations, the Alamosa County Sheriff's Department, the Alamosa Police Department, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Assistant United States Attorney Jeffrey Graves handled the prosecution. United States District Court Judge Robert Blackburn will impose a sentence at a later date.
