Florin Popescu, ATM Skimming, Pennsylvania 2013
A notorious ATM skimming scheme has been brought to an end in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as two Romanian nationals have been sentenced in federal court for their crimes.
Florin Popescu, 31, and Ion Carligeriu, 30, both Romanian Nationals, have been serving time-served on their conviction of conspiracy since being in custody since approximately October 15, 2013
The duo was arrested in connection with a scheme that involved installing ATM skimming equipment on APC kiosks at Postal Centers on McKnight Road and in Squirrel Hill, which were designed to steal customers’ bank account information.
United States District Judge Mark Hornak imposed the sentence on the defendants, who will be immediately deported to Romania by Immigration and Customs Enforcement Operations.
The successful prosecution of these defendants was led by the United States Postal Inspection Service, the United States Secret Service, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations.
Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci prosecuted this case on behalf of the government, commending the agencies involved in the investigation.
U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton also commended the agencies involved in the investigation, stating that their efforts led to the successful prosecution of these defendants.
The defendants will be deported to Romania immediately following the completion of their time-served sentence, marking a significant victory in the fight against cybercrime in the United States.
