Gabriel DeTrace Taylor, Possessing a Firearm as a Felon, Iowa 2022

Published April 21, 2023

A 30-year-old man, Gabriel DeTrace Taylor, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, will be serving 78 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a felon.

Taylor was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams on charges of one count of possessing a firearm as a felon after a guilty plea on November 10, 2022.

Evidence presented at the sentencing hearing revealed that Taylor fled from police and discarded a loaded firearm from the window of the vehicle, along with a backpack containing cocaine and marijuana. This was not the first time Taylor had engaged in such behavior, as a prior instance in March 2021 showed a similar pattern of fleeing from police and throwing a firearm from the vehicle.

In addition to the prison term, Taylor will also serve a 3-year term of supervised release after completing his prison sentence. It is worth noting that there is no parole in the federal system.

Taylor is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Nicole L. Nagin and investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cedar Rapids Police Department as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative. PSN is a program aimed at reducing violent crime through evidence-based strategies and community partnerships.
