CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA - In a shocking turn of events, Garrett Michael Carrigan, a 33-year-old man from Wheeling, West Virginia, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for escaping federal custody.

Carrigan, who was incarcerated for a previous child pornography case in the Northern District of West Virginia, managed to escape when traveling from a federal institution to a residential reentry center in Clarksburg in February 2019.

This incident occurred nearly two months prior to Carrigan's guilty plea in September 2019. He pled guilty to one count of “Escape from Constructive Custody” in that month.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Zelda E. Wesley prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. The United States Marshals Service investigated.

Senior U.S. District Judge Irene M. Keeley presided over the case that led to Carrigan's sentencing.
