Decatur Man Charged with Child Sex Exploitation

A Decatur, Illinois man has been charged with child sex exploitation and child pornography charges. Gary L. Boyle, 34, made his initial appearance in federal court today on seven counts of child sexual exploitation and one count of possession of child pornography.

The indictment charges Boyle with the crimes on February 4 and 21, 2019. If convicted, the statutory maximum penalty for each count of child sexual exploitation is 30 years in prison, while the maximum penalty for possession of child pornography is 10 years in prison.

Boyle was arrested on February 21, 2019, and charged with multiple counts of sexual assault and abuse charges by the Macon County State’s Attorney’s Office. He is currently in law enforcement custody, awaiting a preliminary trial date scheduled for May 7.

The federal case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elly M. Peirson, with the assistance of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations, the Decatur Police Department, the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Members of the public are reminded that an indictment is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

As part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse, the case brings attention to the growing epidemic of child exploitation. Launched in May 2006, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as identify and rescue victims.

Boyle, a resident of the 5400 block of West Main St. in Decatur, is accused of the following crimes: seven counts of child sexual exploitation on February 4, 2019, and one count of possession of child pornography on February 21, 2019.

According to the indictment, the maximum penalties for the charges are as follows: child sexual exploitation – 30 years in prison per count, and possession of child pornography – 10 years in prison.

Boyle's current status is in law enforcement custody, awaiting a preliminary trial date on May 7.
