Gary Lewis Halfe, Failure to Register as Sex Offender, South Dakota 2019

A local man has been sentenced to federal prison after being convicted of failing to register as a sex offender.

Gary Lewis Halfe, 62, of Box Elder, South Dakota, was sentenced on January 4, 2019, to 33 months in federal prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The conviction stems from Halfe, who is a person required to register under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, and a sex offender by reason of conviction under Federal Law, knowingly failed to register and update his registration between December 2017 and February 2018.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshal Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ben Patterson prosecuted the case.

Halfe was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Halfe was required to register as a sex offender due to a previous conviction under Federal Law.

The Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) requires certain individuals to register with the National Sex Offender Public Registry.
