Kansas City Woman Sentenced for Stealing Over $100,000 in Government Benefits

Kansas City, MO - In a shocking case of government benefits fraud, 64-year-old Glenda Jacobs has been sentenced to two years and six months in federal prison without parole. The court also ordered Jacobs to pay restitution to the government.

Jacobs pleaded guilty to theft of government property on September 9, 2014. She admitted to fraudulently obtaining $107,604 in Social Security, unemployment, and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits from January 2009 to August 2013.

According to court documents, Jacobs filed for Supplemental Security Insurance benefits in 1982 and was found disabled. However, she worked continuously under a second Social Security number while continuing to draw benefits, repeatedly failing to report her employment and earnings to the Social Security Administration.

Jacobs' scheme to defraud the government resulted in her receiving $93,922 in Social Security benefits, $8,869 in federal unemployment benefits from August 2011 through September 2012, and $4,813 in SNAP benefits from January 2011 to August 2013.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jane Pansing Brown and investigated by the Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Office of Inspector General, and the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General.

Glenda Jacobs' sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of stealing from the government. As a Kansas City woman, Jacobs' actions not only defrauded the government but also undermined the trust of her community.
