Manhattan Doctor Convicted of Fentanyl Kickbacks Scheme

Gordon Freedman, a Manhattan doctor, has been convicted of accepting bribes and kickbacks from Insys Therapeutics, Inc. in exchange for prescribing millions of dollars' worth of Subsys, a potent fentanyl-based spray.

According to the indictment, Freedman, a pain management specialist, received approximately $308,600 in Speaker Program fees from Insys in exchange for prescribing large volumes of Subsys.

The scheme, which spanned from 2012 to 2014, saw Freedman become one of the top prescribers of Subsys in the nation, accounting for over $1 million in net sales in a single quarter.

The jury convicted Freedman of three counts, including conspiracy to violate the Anti-Kickback Statute, violating the Anti-Kickback Statute, and conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud.

Freedman, 59, faces up to 25 years in prison and must forfeit any ill-gotten gains. He is scheduled to be sentenced on March 12, 2023.

The conviction marks the latest in a string of cases against Manhattan doctors accused of taking kickbacks from pharmaceutical companies.

Freedman's case highlights the corrupting influence of money on the medical profession and the need for stricter regulations to prevent such schemes in the future.
