Gregory S. Boone, Tax Evasion, South Carolina 2024
Columbia, South Carolina - In a shocking move, Gregory S. Boone, a 47-year-old pharmacist from Lancaster, has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for willful failure to pay over taxes.
According to United States Attorney Beth Drake, Boone's sentencing marks the end of a lengthy investigation into his tax-evasion scheme. Boone, who owned both the Lancaster Pharmacy and the Medicine Shoppe pharmacy in Rock Hill, had been withholding federal income taxes from his employees' wages and keeping the money for himself.
Furthermore, facts presented during the hearing revealed that Boone had failed to pay his income taxes since the year 2000. Based on IRS calculations, Boone failed to pay over $350,000 in federal income taxes.
The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service Charlotte Field Office Criminal Division working cooperatively with the IRS Civil Enforcement Division and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney T. DeWayne Pearson of the Columbia office.
Boone's actions have left many in the community stunned, particularly his former employees who were unaware of the tax evasion scheme. 'This is a classic case of 'tax cheating,' said Drake. 'Boone's actions were a clear abuse of trust and a threat to the integrity of our tax system.'
As Boone begins his 18-month prison sentence, many are left to wonder how he was able to get away with such a large-scale tax-evasion scheme for so long. The answer, according to experts, lies in the complexity of tax laws and the lack of oversight in the industry.
Regardless of the reasons behind Boone's actions, one thing is clear: his sentence serves as a warning to others who would attempt to cheat the system. 'This case should serve as a reminder to all businesses and individuals that tax evasion will not be tolerated,' said Drake.
