Gregory Scott, Gun Possession Felony, Iowa 2023

A woman was shot with a gun that Cedar Rapids man Gregory Scott possessed, leading to a six-year prison sentence for the convicted felon. Scott, 39, received the prison term after a guilty plea to possession of a firearm by a felon on March 8, 2023.

The incident occurred on June 8, 2021, when a woman was shot by the gun at Scott’s residence in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Scott agreed that his sentence should be enhanced because he possessed the firearm in connection with the crime of reckless discharge of a firearm.

Scott has multiple felony convictions, including convictions for manufacturing or delivery of cannabis and a prior conviction for felon in possession of a firearm. He was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams to 78 months’ imprisonment.

As part of his sentence, Scott must also serve a 3-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system. Scott is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. On May 26, 2021, the government launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on core principles such as fostering trust and legitimacy in communities.

Prosecutor Assistant United States Attorney Emily K. Nydle and the Cedar Rapids Police Department with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives investigated the case. The case file number is 22-cr-00075.
