Gregory Weymes, Child Pornography, West Virginia 2021
A Boone County man has been accused of a federal child pornography crime, leaving the community outraged and concerned for the safety of its children.
Gregory Weymes, a 58-year-old resident of Ridgeview, West Virginia, pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography on his cell phone.
On February 23, 2021, Weymes was accused of possessing child pornography on his cell phone after law enforcement investigators received a cybertip through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Weymes admitted to using various social media platforms, including MeWe, to view and trade child pornography and that investigators would find child pornography on his phone. A forensic review of Weymes' cell phone uncovered numerous videos depicting child pornography on the device.
Weymes pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography and faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced on October 14, 2021. He will also be required to register as a sex offender.
United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston made the announcement and commended the investigative work of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security-Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
Weymes' case is being prosecuted as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
