Identity Thief Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison After Posing as Syracuse University Graduate

SYRACUSE, NEW YORK – In a case of brazen identity theft, Gregory William Hill, a 38-year-old man from Georgia, has pleaded guilty to misuse of a social security number and aggravated identity theft. Hill, who has used multiple aliases including Gregory Allen Davis, Gregory William Davis, Gregory Davis Dutton, and John Martin Hill, faces a maximum sentence of up to 7 years in prison.

According to the plea agreement, Hill impersonated a graduate of Syracuse University in 2018 and attempted to obtain copies of the victim's final transcript and diploma from the university. To further his scheme, Hill sent the university a copy of a Virginia driver's license displaying his picture and the victim's name. He also presented his own social security card as the victim's and attempted to convince Syracuse University officials that the university needed to update its files with respect to the victim's social security number.

Hill's scheme did not stop there. He applied for a job with a non-profit health care company based in Virginia while posing as the victim and falsely claiming to be a Syracuse University graduate. The 7-year prison sentence Hill is currently serving in Georgia for a serial romance fraud scheme has earned him the nickname 'Sweetheart Swindler.'

The charges against Hill carry a maximum sentence of up to 7 years in prison, including up to 5 years for the social security fraud count, followed by a mandatory consecutive two-year term of imprisonment for the aggravated identity theft count. Hill also faces a fine of up to $500,000 and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years.

Hill is set to be sentenced on November 2, 2023, by United States District Judge Glenn T. Suddaby, who presides over the case. The case is being investigated by the FBI, and it is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael F. Perry.

The case highlights the increasing threat of identity theft and the importance of protecting personal information. As this case demonstrates, identity thieves can go to great lengths to commit their crimes and can have serious consequences for their victims.
