Gurmeet Singh, Rape and Kidnapping, New York 2011

Published February 2, 2026

A heinous crime committed in the backseat of a taxicab in New York has led to a denaturalization action against Gurmeet Singh, a native of India. According to the complaint, Singh kidnapped and sexually assaulted a female passenger in 2009, before naturalizing as a U.S. citizen on October 19, 2011.

As reported by authorities, the victim fell asleep in the backseat of Singh's taxicab, only to awaken to find him on top of her with a knife to her throat. Singh then bound and gagged the victim, blindfolded her, removed her clothes, and raped her.

Singh concealed these acts throughout his naturalization proceedings, lying about his past to become a U.S. citizen. After naturalizing, Singh was convicted in New York of Rape in the First Degree and Kidnapping in the Second Degree as a Sexually Motivated Felony and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

This case demonstrates the commitment of the U.S. government to protecting American citizens and defending the sanctity of U.S. citizenship. As stated by Attorney General Pamela Bondi, "American citizenship is a great and sacred privilege that must be earned honestly."

The denaturalization action, filed in the Eastern District of New York, seeks to revoke Singh's citizenship and cancel his certificate of naturalization. Under the Immigration and Nationality Act, a naturalized U.S. citizen's citizenship may be revoked if the naturalization was illegally procured or procured by concealment of a material fact or by willful misrepresentation.

The claims made in the complaint are allegations only, and there has been no determination of liability. The case was investigated by the Civil Division's Office of Immigration Litigation and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York.

Singh, 51, native of India, is a convicted rapist and kidnapper. He was convicted in New York of Rape in the First Degree and Kidnapping in the Second Degree as a Sexually Motivated Felony and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
