Gustavo De Jesus Ramirez-Ramirez, Illegally Reentering the United States, Florida 2024
A daring escape attempt by a Colombian national ended in a 27-month prison sentence after he was caught burglarizing a jewelry store in Jacksonville, Florida.
Gustavo De Jesus Ramirez-Ramirez, 54, was arrested on November 11, 2022, after he rappelled from a hole in the ceiling of a business and drilled through three adjacent business walls and into a jewelry store.
According to court records, Ramirez-Ramirez was previously deported twice, including once in 2014 after a conviction for illegal reentry into the United States.
After his arrest, he pleaded guilty in state court to burglary of a dwelling with damage and burglary of a structure.
On September 16, 2024, United States District Judge Wendy W. Berger sentenced Ramirez-Ramirez to 27 months in federal prison for illegal reentry into the United States by a previously deported alien.
The case was investigated by the Homeland Security Investigations and the Jacksonville's Sheriff's Office, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Brenna Falzetta.
Ramirez-Ramirez's previous deportations and convictions underscore the seriousness of the offenses, and the importance of enforcing immigration laws.
