Donna Karen Holyan, Stabbing, Arizona 2024

PHOENIX, AZ – A Fort Defiance woman will spend the next 28 months behind bars after pleading guilty to a brutal attack on the Navajo Nation Indian Reservation. Donna Karen Holyan, 50, received her sentence today from U.S. District Judge John J. Tuchi, along with a three-year term of supervised release following her imprisonment.

The case, investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, detailed a vicious assault at a local grocery store. Evidence presented in court showed Holyan repeatedly stabbed the victim approximately four times. The attack left the victim with serious bodily injuries, prompting federal charges.

Both Holyan and the victim are enrolled members of the Navajo Nation Indian Reservation, adding a layer of complexity to the case and highlighting the jurisdictional challenges inherent in crimes committed on tribal lands. The U.S. Attorney’s Office took the lead, prosecuting Holyan on the charge of assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Christine Keller, of the District of Arizona, Phoenix, spearheaded the prosecution, successfully securing the 28-month sentence. Federal authorities have been increasingly focused on violent crime within Native American communities, often working in tandem with tribal law enforcement.

The sentencing of Holyan sends a clear message: acts of violence, especially those targeting individuals within the Navajo Nation, will not be tolerated. The Department of Justice continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of all citizens, regardless of their location or tribal affiliation. The case number is CR-16-08245-PCT-JJT, release number 2017-046_Holyan.
