Hugo Brian Fuentas-Eguigurens, Illegal Re-Entry, Louisiana 2024

Hugo Brian Fuentas-Eguigurens, a 27-year-old Honduran national, has been sentenced to 14 months imprisonment for illegal reentry of a removed alien.

On March 12, 2024, United States District Judge Darrel James Papillion handed down the sentence after Fuentas-Eguigurens pleaded guilty to the charge in violation of Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a).

In addition to the prison time, the court also sentenced Fuentas-Eguigurens to 1 year of supervised release and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee.

According to court documents, Fuentas-Eguigurens reentered the United States after being previously deported on April 26, 2019. He was found to be unlawfully present in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana on April 1, 2023, based on an Immigration Alien Query.

Federal authorities placed an immigration detainer on Fuentas-Eguigurens after his arrest by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office on March 31, 2023. Records revealed that Fuentas-Eguigurens has been arrested for numerous crimes, and had convictions for simple escape and resisting an officer.

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement in investigating this matter. Assistant U.S. Attorney Carter K.D. Guice, Jr. of the General Crimes Unit is in charge of the prosecution.

The case is a reminder of the importance of enforcing our nation's immigration laws and holding individuals accountable for violating them.
