Hugo Campuzano Cuellar, Illegal Reentry of a Deported Alien, Louisiana 2015

In a shocking case of disregard for U.S. borders, Hugo Campuzano Cuellar, a 37-year-old Mexican national, pleaded guilty to reentering the United States multiple times illegally.

Cuellar, who was previously removed from the country on May 23, 2002, May 16, 2005, and May 7, 2009, was encountered by immigration officers in the St. Mary Parish jail on April 8, 2015. He admitted to being a citizen of Mexico and was subsequently charged with one count of illegal reentry of a deported alien.

The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Louisiana, Stephanie A. Finley, announced the guilty plea, which was entered before U.S. District Judge Richard T. Haik. Cuellar now faces 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.

The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations and the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Dominic A. Rossetti prosecuting the case.

The case highlights the serious consequences of reentering the United States after being deported. Cuellar’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for U.S. laws and put a strain on the country’s immigration system.
