Human Smuggling Ring Leader Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison

A human smuggling ring leader was sentenced to 10 years in prison for her role in smuggling over 100 migrants from Honduras to the United States for profit. The leader, Sofia Garcia, was sentenced on May 30, 2024 in a U.S. District Court in Houston, Texas.

Garcia's sentencing is a significant blow to the human smuggling operations in the region. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas, in a statement, said that Garcia was responsible for smuggling numerous migrants across the U.S.-Mexico border, resulting in significant financial gain for her and her organization.

The Justice Department has been actively pursuing human smuggling operations in the region, with a focus on dismantling the leadership of transnational human smuggling networks. In June 2021, the Justice Department launched Joint Task Force Alpha (JTFA), a partnership between the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) aimed at disrupting and dismantling human smuggling and trafficking organizations operating in and through Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Mexico.

The JTFA has achieved significant results, including over 300 arrests, over 240 U.S. convictions, and over 170 U.S. defendants sentenced to prison. The task force has also seized substantial assets and contraband, including millions of dollars in cash, real property, vehicles, firearms, and ammunition.

The Justice Department has also launched an Anti-Smuggling Rewards (ASR) Initiative to dismantle the leadership of human smuggling organizations. The ASR Initiative will offer financial rewards for information leading to the identification, location, arrest, or conviction of those most responsible for significant human smuggling activities in the region.

The ASR Initiative will target categories of high-priority human smuggling targets, including leaders of certain identified cartels and human smuggling organizations. The initiative will use existing statutory authority to offer financial rewards for information leading to the arrest or conviction of those most responsible for human smuggling activities.

The Justice Department's efforts to dismantle human smuggling operations are ongoing, with a focus on disrupting and dismantling transnational human smuggling networks. The department's actions aim to create a deterrent effect, impacting not only the defendant but also discouraging future smuggling operations.
