Lancaster Man Charged with Child Pornography

In a disturbing case out of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, 48-year-old Irvin Randall Newswanger has been charged with possession and distribution of child pornography.

According to the United States Attorney's Office, Newswanger was indicted on January 12, 2017, with the charges announced by Acting United States Attorney Louis D. Lappen.

If convicted, Newswanger faces a maximum possible sentence of 40 years' imprisonment, with a mandatory minimum of 5 years imprisonment, lifetime supervised release, a $500,000 fine, and a $200 special assessment.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the federal government in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.

The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant United States Attorney Roberta Benjamin handling the prosecution.

Newswanger is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The case serves as a reminder of the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, and the importance of efforts to combat it.
