Published July 17, 2025

A notorious Hammond man has been put behind bars for his role in a firearms and fentanyl trafficking scheme. Isaiah Castro, 23, was sentenced to 60 months in prison followed by 24 months of supervised release after pleading guilty to possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

According to documents in the case, on April 16, 2024, Castro distributed pills containing fentanyl while possessing a firearm. A search warrant resulted in the recovery of the firearm. Law enforcement also recovered another firearm with an extended magazine, firearm magazines, ammunition, and cash.

This case is a stark reminder of the devastating impact that fentanyl has on our communities. The substance has been linked to numerous overdose deaths and continues to plague our streets.

Castro was previously convicted of resisting law enforcement and was on probation at the time of his latest offense. His history of run-ins with the law raises serious questions about the effectiveness of our justice system.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Indiana High Intensity Drug Trafficking Task Force. Assistant United States Attorney Caitlin M. Padula prosecuted the case.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in our communities. The initiative brings together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.

As part of the PSN program, the government has launched a violent crime reduction strategy focused on fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
