Waterloo Felon Sentenced to Five Years in Prison
A 29-year-old Waterloo man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for unlawful gun possession.
Jacob Mervin Gary, of Waterloo, Iowa, was sentenced on July 11, 2019, to 60 months in prison after a guilty plea to being a felon and drug user in possession of a firearm.
Gary was found to have knowingly possessed multiple guns after being convicted of conspiracy to commit robbery and attempted burglary. He was also found to be an unlawful user of marijuana at the time.
On September 26, 2018, Waterloo police officers searched Gary's residence and found a rifle with a high capacity magazine attached, another rifle, a pistol, and multiple types of ammunition. Gary was on parole at the time.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing violent crime. PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.
Gary is being held in the United States Marshal's custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. He will also serve a 3-year term of supervised release after the prison term.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kyndra Lundquist and investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and the Waterloo Police Department.
