Jamal Weir, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Connecticut 2017

Published May 29, 2019

Convicted Felon Jamal Weir Sentenced to 21 Months in Prison for Illegally Purchasing Handgun.

A Bridgeport, Connecticut man has been sentenced to prison time for his role in the illegal purchase of a handgun at a Newington gun store. Jamal Weir, 30, was sentenced to 21 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

According to court documents, Weir and his accomplice, Tymon Peterson, texted one another about purchasing firearms in August and September 2017. Peterson, a valid pistol permit holder, purchased a SCCY Model CPX-2, 9mm semi-automatic pistol from Hoffman's Gun Center in Newington on September 22, 2017. However, Weir, as a convicted felon, is prohibited from possessing firearms.

Weir provided Peterson with cash to purchase the firearm on his behalf, and Peterson filled out an ATF Form 4473 falsely representing that he was the actual purchaser. After exiting the store, Peterson handed the pistol over to Weir.

Weir's criminal history includes state convictions for illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, possession of narcotics with intent to sell, and carrying a pistol without a permit. He has been detained since his arrest on September 17, 2018, and pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon on December 6, 2018.

His accomplice, Tymon Peterson, of Stratford, pleaded guilty to one count of making a false statement during the purchase of a firearm on December 14, 2018, and awaits sentencing. This investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with the assistance of the Connecticut State Police, the Newington Police Department, and Hoffman's Gun Center. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Anthony E. Kaplan and Margaret E. Maigret.

This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer for everyone by bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve.
