Jamarcus Dewayne Hatcher, Armed Robbery, Alabama 2024
Montgomery Man Sentenced to 30 Years in Prison for Armed Robbery
A Montgomery man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in a brazen armed robbery that left a gas station shaken.
On April 6, 2023, Jamarcus Dewayne Hatcher, 21, of Montgomery, Alabama, entered a gas station in Hope Hull, Alabama, and demanded that the cashier hand over all the money in the register. The cashier, fearing for their life, complied and handed Hatcher approximately $90.
But Hatcher's demands didn't stop there. He then asked the cashier where the security cameras were located and, upon being told, walked into the side office area and shot into a device that he believed to be the security DVR. The device was likely a security camera, but it's unclear whether it was damaged in the incident.
After shooting at the device, Hatcher quickly exited the gas station and fled on foot. He was later arrested and charged with Hobbs Act robbery and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.
Hatcher pleaded guilty to the charges on January 22, 2024, and was sentenced to 360 months in prison by a federal judge on May 1, 2024. The judge also considered five separate armed robberies or attempted armed robberies of gas station convenience stores and walk-up restaurants that Hatcher was involved in between March and April 2023.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Montgomery Police Department, and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office investigated the case with assistance from the Dallas County Sheriff's Office. Assistant United States Attorney John J. Geer prosecuted the case.
Hatcher's sentencing comes as a relief to the community, who are grateful that the perpetrator of the heinous crime has been brought to justice. The incident has left a lasting impact on the gas station and its employees, who will never forget the terrifying experience they endured at the hands of Hatcher.
Hatcher's sentence serves as a reminder that armed robbery is a serious crime that will not be tolerated in our community. The sentence also highlights the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies in bringing perpetrators to justice.
The case serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of armed robbery and the importance of taking such crimes seriously. It's a reminder that our community will not stand idly by while perpetrators of such crimes are allowed to roam free.
