A Keshena man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for a heinous crime that shocked the community.

On January 8, 2014, James A. Peters, 27, of Keshena, located on the Menominee Indian Reservation, in the State of Wisconsin, committed a sex act with an 11-year-old female.

The victim, who was just 11 years old at the time, was incapable of appraising the nature of the conduct. Peters, who admitted to the abuse, was charged with one count of engaging in a sex act with a person incapable of appraising the nature of the conduct.

The case was investigated by the Menominee Tribal Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Benjamin L. Whittemore prosecuted the case.

Peters pleaded guilty to the federal information charging him with the crime on May 28, 2014. He was sentenced to 240 months of imprisonment, followed by a term of 15 years on supervised release.
