Life Behind Bars: Verbena Man Sentenced to Life for Methamphetamine Trafficking

Autauga County, AL - In a shocking turn of events, James Calvin Talley, Jr., 37, of Verbena, Alabama, has been sentenced to life in prison for his role in a massive methamphetamine trafficking operation. The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Louis Franklin.

Talley's conviction for distribution of methamphetamine carried a mandatory life sentence due to his prior felony drug convictions. The federal system does not offer parole, leaving Talley to serve his life sentence without the possibility of early release.

The evidence presented at trial revealed a stunning tale of drug trafficking and firearms crimes. On December 3, 2016, a drug courier delivered over 100 pounds of marijuana to Talley's home in Verbena. The courier then followed Talley to a house in Marbury, Alabama, where he was arrested by law enforcement as he tried to flee through the back door.

Inside the house, which belonged to co-defendant Richie Dale Murphy, officers found two pistols, over 3 pounds of methamphetamine, cash, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Following the search, law enforcement also discovered two more pistols, over $50,000 in cash, a currency counter, and drug ledgers at Talley's home.

Murphy, who previously pleaded guilty to his charges, testified that he and Talley were business partners and used Murphy's home as a stash house for marijuana and methamphetamine. Murphy is facing at least 15 years in prison for his charges and is awaiting sentencing.

The case was investigated by the DEA, Autauga County Sheriff's Office, and Chilton County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the Alabama Attorney General's Office, Millbrook Police Department, Montgomery Police Department, and Prattville Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys John Geer and Kevin Davidson prosecuted the case.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Louis Franklin commended the efforts of the law enforcement agencies involved in the case, stating, 'This sentence is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our law enforcement partners in bringing these individuals to justice.'
