Sioux Falls Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Illegal Possession of a Firearm
SIOUX FALLS - In a recent sentencing hearing, Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down a two-year prison sentence to James Daniel Lathrop, 31, for his conviction of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person.
Lathrop was sentenced on September 29, 2025 and will also serve three years of supervised release, with a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The conviction stems from an incident on December 24, 2024, when law enforcement officers found Lathrop in possession of a firearm and ammunition in Sioux Falls, SD. Lathrop is prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition due to a previous felony conviction and his status as an unlawful user of controlled substances.
The case was investigated by the Sioux Falls Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations. Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Connie Larson prosecuted the case.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that focuses on combating gun violence and reducing the presence of transnational criminal organizations in local communities.
Lathrop was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
