Jameshia Mack, Tax Return and Identity Theft, Florida 2013
A Tampa woman has been sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison for her role in a fraudulent tax return and identity theft scheme.
U.S. District Judge Richard A. Lazzara handed down the 75-month prison sentence to Jameshia Mack, 27, for wire fraud and aggravated identity theft after she was found to have filed fraudulent tax returns using stolen personal identifying information.
The court also ordered Mack to serve an additional 14 months in federal prison, to run consecutive to the 75-month sentence, for committing the crimes while on supervised release from a previous federal sentence for aggravated identity theft in the Western District of Kentucky.
The total sentence of imprisonment for Mack is 7 years, 5 months. As part of her sentence, the court entered a money judgment in the amount of $100,135 against Mack, representing the proceeds she received from the scheme, and ordered her to pay restitution in that amount to the Internal Revenue Service.
Mack pleaded guilty on October 17, 2013. According to court documents, Mack was on federal supervised release in 2011 after serving a prison term for bank fraud and aggravated identity theft in the Western District of Kentucky. After returning to the Tampa area, she defrauded the IRS by filing false and fraudulent income tax returns in her own and other persons' names, and directed that the returns be put onto prepaid debit cards.
Mack then withdrew cash from the debit cards or spent the funds on retail purchases, a luxury automobile, and casino transactions. When the Tampa Police Department encountered Mack during a traffic stop, she had stacks of cash along with multiple credit cards and prepaid debit cards in other people's names.
This case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation and the Tampa Police Department. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Josephine W. Thomas.
