Gun Thieves Sentenced in Federal Court

Lynchburg, VA - Jaquan Tyree Harris, Dequan Montez Kelso, and Kwamane Jarrae McCoy, three men from Amherst and Appomattox, Virginia, have been sentenced for their roles in the theft of 56 guns from TNT Outfitters, a federally licensed firearms dealer in Appomattox.

According to the United States Attorney's Office, the men, all previously convicted felons, broke into TNT Outfitters in the middle of the night in January 2016, making off with a cache of firearms, including a Glock 17, HiPoint C9, Smith and Wesson M&P 9 Pro, Remington Model 700 Shotgun and a Ruger Mini 14 .223 Rifle.

Harris, 21, was sentenced to 52 months in federal prison for stealing firearms from a federally licensed firearms dealer and being a previously convicted felon illegally in possession of a firearm. Kelso, 23, was sentenced to 48 months in federal prison, while McCoy, 22, received a 60-month sentence.

As part of their sentences, the men were ordered to pay restitution to the gun shop owner for damages stemming from the break-in.

“Keeping illegal guns out of the hands of prohibited users is a priority of the United States Attorney’s Office,” said United States Attorney John P. Fishwick Jr. “One of the first steps we can take in keeping our communities safe is getting illegal guns off our streets. This case is a prime example of law enforcement working to do just that.”

The investigation into the case was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Virginia State Police and the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office. A $10,000 reward is still being offered for information leading to the recovery of the missing firearms.
