RICHMOND, Va. - In a shocking turn of events, a Richmond man was sentenced to two years in prison for possession of a machinegun.

Jarec Dominique Brown, 23, was a passenger in a car that was pulled over by a Hanover County deputy sheriff on September 9, 2022. During the traffic stop, the deputy lawfully searched a backpack that Brown was carrying and found a 9mm firearm equipped with a machinegun conversion device (MCD).

The MCD rendered the firearm capable of fully automatic fire, and Brown was also found to be in possession of three ammunition magazines and 66 rounds of ammunition. Brown admitted to purchasing the MCD on the darknet.

This is not Brown's first run-in with the law. He has three previous convictions for possession of a concealed weapon.

Brown was sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge John A. Gibney Jr. after a lengthy investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Hanover County Sheriff's Office.

U.S. Attorney Jessica D. Aber announced the sentencing, which was also made possible by the efforts of Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen W. Miller and former Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Devon E. Schulz, an Assistant Attorney General with the Virginia Attorney General's Office.

According to court documents, Brown was found guilty of possession of a machinegun, a crime that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Brown's sentence of two years in prison is a significant blow to the community, and a reminder of the dangers of possessing such a deadly weapon.

The public is advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. In the meantime, Jarec Dominique Brown will serve his sentence, a consequence of his actions that will keep him off the streets for the next two years.
