Alaska Men Charged in Large-Scale Drug Trafficking Operation

In a significant blow to the state's illicit drug trade, three Anchorage men have been arraigned on federal charges related to a massive drug trafficking conspiracy.

Jared Thomas Bowers, 23, Christopher Thomas Mejia, 24, and Rhadames Marmolejos Jr., 20, are accused of participating in a conspiracy to distribute heroin, with Mejia and Bowers facing additional charges for possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. Marmolejos Jr. has been charged with eight counts of distribution of a controlled substance.

The indictment, unsealed on 2024-06-09, alleges that the trio engaged in a brazen scheme to traffic heroin, with potential penalties including a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a potential life sentence for a conviction of drug trafficking conspiracy.

Each defendant also faces a potential fine of up to $10,000,000. Possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years in prison with a potential life sentence, and a fine of up to $250,000. The remaining charges in the indictment carry maximum sentences of 20 years in prison and fines of up to $1,000,000.

According to U.S. Attorney Karen L. Loeffler, the Drug Enforcement Administration conducted the investigation that led to the indictment. All defendants remain incarcerated pending trial in this case.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
