Jason Avery Mattson, Murder & Kidnapping, Montana 2020
A gruesome act of violence on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation has led to a conviction. Jason Avery Mattson, 30, has admitted to murdering a man and holding a woman hostage by knifepoint.
Mattson pleaded guilty to second degree murder and kidnapping as charged in an indictment. The maximum penalty for these crimes could result in life in prison, a $250,000 fine, and five years of supervised release.
A federal court in Great Falls, Montana heard the case. Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris presided over the court proceedings.
The incident occurred on March 3, 2020. Law enforcement was called to the Blackfeet Indian Reservation after the discovery of a body, which showed signs of homicide. An autopsy confirmed the manner of death was homicide, with evidence of blunt force injury.
On March 10, 2020, Mattson called Blackfeet Law Enforcement Services, confessing to the crime. He also stated he had a knife and a gun. While officers were responding to the residence, Mattson called again and told dispatch he was holding a hostage, identified as Jane Doe, at knifepoint.
Mattson threatened to kill Jane Doe and held her hostage for about four hours before she was able to escape. He was taken into custody.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kalah Paisley is handling the prosecution of the case. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the FBI, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and Blackfeet Law Enforcement Services.
Mattson is currently detained and is set to be sentenced on June 24. The exact outcome of the case will be determined by the judge at that time.
