Jason G. Burgett, Bank Robbery, Wisconsin 2020
A serial bank robber in Wisconsin has been sentenced to 164 months in federal prison for his crimes. Jason G. Burgett, age 43, appeared in federal court in Green Bay on February 18, 2020 and received the sentence. He was also ordered to pay full restitution and serve three years on supervised release following the completion of his federal sentence.
The charges stem from a series of bank robberies committed by Burgett in Wisconsin. The crimes include the June 3, 2019 robbery of the Farmers State Bank in the Town of Fremont, the July 8, 2019 robbery of the Stephenson National Bank and Trust in the Town of Pembine, and the July 15, 2019 robbery of the Citizens Community Federal Bank in the Village of Lake Hallie. Burgett also attempted to rob the Northern United Federal Credit Union in Escanaba, Michigan, on July 5, 2019.
Burgett's lengthy criminal history played a significant role in the sentencing. He had previously been convicted of two bank robbery charges in the late 1990s. Senior U.S. District Judge William C. Griesbach noted that Burgett's actions were 'frightening offenses' that caused 'terror' for the bank employees.
The case was investigated by the Waupaca County Sheriff's Office, the Marinette County Sheriff's Office, the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office, the Escanaba Public Safety Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Daniel R. Humble prosecuted the case.
Burgett's sentence sends a strong message about the severity of bank robbery. The crimes have a significant impact on the community and the victims. The sentence will ensure that Burgett does not continue to pose a threat to the public.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin stated that the sentence is a result of the hard work and dedication of the investigators and prosecutors involved in the case.
