Jason Sparling, False Claim and False Statement, South Dakota 2016
Federal Indictment for False Claim and False Statement
A 42-year-old Athol man has been accused of submitting a false claim to the Livestock Forage Disaster Program for the loss of grazing land. Jason Sparling, 42, was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 19, 2016, for making false claims to the federal government.
The indictment alleges that Sparling misrepresented the truth about the loss of grazing land, which is a violation of federal law. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 5 years of imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
Sparling appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Daneta Wollmann on May 13, 2016, and pleaded not guilty to the indictment. The investigation is being conducted by the Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of Agriculture. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ben Patterson is prosecuting the case.
The charges are mere accusations, and Sparling is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Sparling was released pending trial. A trial date has not been set.
The Livestock Forage Disaster Program provides financial assistance to farmers who have experienced livestock losses due to natural disasters. The program is designed to help farmers recover from such losses, but it must be administered honestly and without deception. Sparling's alleged actions undermine the integrity of the program and the trust placed in it by taxpayers.
The case against Sparling highlights the importance of honesty and transparency in government programs. It also serves as a reminder that those who cheat the system will be held accountable.
Jason Sparling's case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of South Dakota. The case is ongoing, and no further information is available at this time.
