SCRANTON, Pennsylvania - Javier Correa, a 41-year-old resident of Scranton, Pennsylvania, was sentenced to 210 months in prison for his role in a significant methamphetamine and fentanyl trafficking operation.
According to the United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Correa was found guilty of possession with intent to distribute more than 50 grams of methamphetamine and more than 400 grams of fentanyl.
The investigation into Correa's activities began on April 29, 2021, when state parole and Drug Enforcement Administration agents searched his Scranton residence and seized a significant amount of illicit substances, including 174 grams of methamphetamine, 611 grams of fentanyl, a loaded Bersa 9mm handgun, firearm magazines, ammunition, and $30,427.25 in cash.
The case was investigated by the DEA, the Scranton Police Department, and the Pennsylvania State Parole officers. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Geoffrey W. MacArthur and Brian Gallagher prosecuted the case.
Correa's sentence is the result of a district-wide initiative to combat the nationwide epidemic of heroin and fentanyl trafficking. The Heroin Initiative, led by the United States Attorney's Office, targets heroin traffickers operating in the Middle District of Pennsylvania and is part of a coordinated effort among federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who commit heroin-related offenses.
The case is also part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve.
On May 26, 2021, the government launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on core principles, including fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
