Jeannie Rene Romero, Child Abuse and Child Neglect, Oklahoma 2022
Child Abuse Scandal Rocks Oklahoma Family
A heart-wrenching case of child abuse has left a Oklahoma family reeling. Jeannie Rene Romero, 25, was sentenced to 60 months in prison for her role in abusing her three-week-old baby.
The crime occurred in October 2022, while Jeannie was changing the baby's diaper. In a disturbing display of violence, she admitted to using unreasonable force, breaking the baby's femur in half. The horrific injury was not reported to medical professionals for over 48 hours, allowing the baby's condition to worsen.
Doctors who treated the baby noted that the infant had additional injuries consistent with abuse. The family, who are citizens of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, were removed from the home and placed in the care of family members.
Jeannie's husband, Jacob Alejandro Romero, 24, was also sentenced in connection with the case. He was ordered to serve 24 months imprisonment for Child Neglect in Indian Country. Jacob was working at the time of the abuse but failed to report the injury to authorities.
The FBI and Sapulpa Police Department investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie N. Ihler handling the prosecution.
Jeannie will remain in custody pending transfer to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. Jacob was previously released on bond but was taken into custody following his sentencing in June.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of child abuse and neglect. Our thoughts are with the family and the baby who suffered at the hands of their caregivers.
