Jeffrey Epstein, Violent Crime, Maryland 2017

Published August 24, 2017

On August 24, 2017, a federal grand jury in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland (MDD Federal District) indicted Jeffrey Edward Epstein, a convicted sex offender, on multiple charges related to the production, transportation, and possession of child pornography.

The 66-year-old defendant, a billionaire financier, was accused of engaging in a scheme to recruit and exploit minor girls, some as young as 14, to engage in commercial sex acts. The charges included one count of sex trafficking of minors, in addition to multiple counts of producing, receiving, and possessing child pornography.

According to court documents, the investigation revealed that Epstein had paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to potential witnesses to silence them. Prosecutors also alleged that Epstein had used his wealth and influence to cover up the crimes.

The case drew widespread attention and sparked a national conversation about human trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable minors. Epstein's defense team argued that the charges were unfounded and that the evidence relied on hearsay statements from witnesses.

On October 11, 2019, Epstein died in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York, while awaiting trial. The official cause of death remains unclear, although it is believed to be a result of a combination of factors, including hanging and pre-existing medical conditions.
