Jeffrey S. Walton, Abusive Sexual Contact, West Virginia 2013
BECKLEY, W.Va. - A former federal prison employee has been convicted of a heinous crime, leaving many to question the safety and security of our nation's correctional facilities.
Jeffrey S. Walton, 48, of Ronceverte, West Virginia, pled guilty in federal court in Beckley today to abusive sexual contact with a female federal inmate. The disturbing incident occurred on one occasion in May or June of 2013, when Walton, who was employed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons at the time, acted as the inmate's work supervisor at the Alderson facility.
According to court documents, Walton admitted to touching the breasts of the inmate, violating the trust and authority that came with his position. His actions are a stark reminder of the power dynamics at play in our correctional system and the devastating consequences that can arise when that power is abused.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant United States Attorney John File handling the prosecution. The fact that Walton is no longer employed by the Bureau of Prisons is some small measure of justice, but the true test of accountability will come on July 31, 2014, when United States District Judge Irene Berger schedules the sentencing.
Walton faces up to two years in prison and a $250,000 fine for his crime. The maximum sentence is a bleak reminder of the severity of the offense and the need for accountability in our correctional system. As a society, we must prioritize the safety and well-being of those in our care, and hold those who fail to do so accountable for their actions.
The investigation and prosecution of this case serve as a crucial reminder of the importance of vigilance and accountability in our corrections system. We must continue to push for reforms and improvements that prioritize the safety and well-being of inmates and staff alike.
In the meantime, the people of West Virginia can take some small measure of comfort in knowing that justice is being served. For those who have been victimized by the actions of Jeffrey S. Walton, we offer our deepest sympathies and support.
