SPRINGFIELD, MO – Jerry Wheeler, 48, known on the streets as “Love,” will spend the next 35 years in federal prison after being sentenced for his central role in a fentanyl distribution network that poisoned communities across Christian and Greene counties. U.S. District Judge Roseann Ketchmark delivered the harsh sentence on November 21, effectively removing a major supplier from Springfield’s deadly drug trade.
Wheeler pleaded guilty back on December 15, 2022, to one count of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and one count of possessing firearms in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime. Federal investigators traced Wheeler’s operation back to September 23, 2018, revealing a sustained effort to flood the area with the potent and often lethal opioid. Court documents detail Wheeler’s role as a key supplier, feeding fentanyl to numerous smaller distributors throughout Springfield – often disguised as heroin.
The bust began to tighten around Wheeler when co-defendant Sheron Loggins, 50, of Florissant, was pulled over on Interstate 44 on September 8, 2019, hauling a staggering 496 grams of fentanyl – enough to deliver over 4,000 potentially fatal doses. Wheeler later admitted he was the intended recipient of that shipment, planning to further distribute the drug across Springfield. A subsequent raid on Wheeler’s residence on November 14, 2019, uncovered a chilling arsenal: a loaded Sig Sauer .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol, an Izmash .308-caliber semi-automatic rifle, and a Hi-Point 9mm semi-automatic pistol, all stashed within easy reach.
The scale of Wheeler’s operation is staggering. Authorities confirm he was responsible for distributing multi-kilogram quantities of fentanyl. The grim reality, highlighted in court documents, is that Missouri is ground zero for the opioid crisis, with a drug overdose death rate exceeding 21.1 per 100,000 in 2020 – placing it among the nine hardest-hit states west of the Mississippi. In 2022 alone, 1,577 Missourians fatally overdosed on opioids, meaning one in every 45 deaths in the state was opioid-related, with fentanyl now the primary killer.
Wheeler isn’t acting alone. Marquise D. Martin, 33, of Springfield, was previously sentenced on June 14, 2023, to 12 years in federal prison for his involvement in the conspiracy. Loggins has also pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing. The investigation, spearheaded by the Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and local law enforcement agencies, is part of the Department of Justice’s Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) program.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Byron H. Black is prosecuting the case, signaling a continued commitment to dismantling drug networks and holding those responsible for fueling the opioid epidemic accountable. While Wheeler’s sentence is significant, the flow of fentanyl into Springfield and across Missouri remains a critical threat, demanding ongoing and relentless law enforcement action.
