Gainesville, Florida - In a shocking turn of events, Jesse Jay Perez, a 28-year-old from Morgan Hill, California, has been sentenced to three years in federal prison for possession of ammunition by a convicted felon.

According to court records, Perez was arrested on January 1, 2025, after a traffic stop for riding a bike without a rear-facing red light in violation of Florida State Statute. During the stop, law enforcement discovered an active felony arrest warrant out of the State of California and subsequently searched Perez's backpack.

The search yielded a staggering 13 magazines, 380 rounds of ammunition, and all the component parts necessary to build a 'ghost gun' semi-automatic rifle.

Perez, a previously convicted felon in the State of California for manufacture, distribution, sale or transport of an assault weapon, was charged with possession of ammunition by a convicted felon.

The conviction and sentence were the result of a joint investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Gainesville Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Adam Hapner prosecuted the case.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the federal government to combat violent crime and protect our communities.
