California Woman Sentenced for Firearm Possession
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - In a shocking turn of events, a California woman has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
Jessica Payge Malcolm, 27, was found in possession of a Glock .45 caliber pistol with an extended 30-round magazine, located in her waistband, near the Northway Mall in Anchorage, Alaska on Jan. 27, 2018.
Malcolm, who has five prior felony convictions in California for burglary, forgery, and fraud-related offenses, was prohibited from possessing a firearm. Despite this, she was able to obtain and carry a loaded firearm, putting herself and others at risk.
The Anchorage Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducted the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of this case. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney James E. Stinson prosecuted the case.
Malcolm was arrested for illegally possessing the firearm and was later released on bail. However, she failed to appear in court on the state charges filed in Alaska and fled to California. It was not until she was located and arrested in California that she was brought to justice.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program that has been historically successful in bringing together all levels of law enforcement to reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.
Malcolm's sentence is a reminder that possessing a firearm as a convicted felon is a serious offense with serious consequences. We urge everyone to take this matter seriously and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
In conclusion, the sentencing of Jessica Payge Malcolm is a significant victory for law enforcement and a reminder that we will not tolerate violent crime in our communities.
