Local Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Heroin Trafficking
In a federal court hearing held today, Jimmy Cheatham, also known as ‘Shoe,’ 24, was sentenced to two years and three months in federal prison for his involvement in heroin trafficking in the Huntington area. The sentence comes after Cheatham pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute heroin.
The investigation into Cheatham’s activities began in 2015 and continued into 2016, resulting in multiple arrests and the recovery of substantial amounts of heroin and cash. On August 16, 2016, Cheatham was taken into custody on an active federal warrant for conspiracy to distribute heroin. During the arrest, agents with the Huntington FBI Drug Task Force located approximately six grams of heroin concealed on his person.
Agents also discovered approximately $1,800 in cash, which was determined to be proceeds from heroin sales. The investigation revealed that Cheatham had sold over 16 grams of heroin to a confidential informant working for the Task Force on August 5, 2015, in exchange for $2,000. Additionally, a search of 126 Olive Street in Huntington on July 9, 2015, yielded $6,314 in cash and an AR-15 style firearm concealed in the attic.
The case against Cheatham was handled by Assistant United States Attorney Joseph F. Adams, with the Huntington FBI Drug Task Force conducting the investigation. Chief United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers imposed the sentence. This case is part of an ongoing effort to combat the illicit sale and misuse of prescription drugs and heroin in the Southern District of West Virginia.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office, joined by federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, is committed to aggressively pursuing and shutting down illegal pill trafficking, eliminating open air drug markets, and curtailing the spread of opiate painkillers and heroin in communities across the Southern District.
With this sentence, the community can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that another individual responsible for contributing to the heroin epidemic has been held accountable. As the U.S. Attorney’s Office continues to work tirelessly to address this issue, it is essential that the public remains vigilant and reports any suspicious activity to the authorities.
