Colombian Fugitive Sentenced for ID Theft in Monroe

MONROE, La. - In a shocking turn of events, Jimmy Hurtado, a 36-year-old Colombian fugitive, was sentenced to 36 months in prison for using a stolen birth certificate and Social Security card to obtain identification cards in Monroe.

Hurtado was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Terry A. Doughty on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, after pleading guilty to one count of falsely representing to be a citizen of the United States, one count of false representation and use of a Social Security number, and one count of aggravated identity theft.

According to the guilty plea, Hurtado used the identity of a United States citizen from Puerto Rico in 2010 to obtain a state-issued identification card from the Monroe Public Safety Office. He supplied a birth certificate and a Social Security number, and was able to renew the identification card in 2011 and 2012 and obtain a driver’s license using the same documents.

The investigation into Hurtado’s activities was conducted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, ATF, and Homeland Security Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary J. Mudrick prosecuted the case.

Hurtado’s sentencing marks the culmination of a lengthy investigation into his activities, and serves as a warning to those who would seek to misuse the identities of others.
