Jobson Marangoni De Castro, Interstate Transportation of Stolen Property, California 2023
A Beverly Hills man has been brought to justice for a brazen theft case that left two Brazilian tourists reeling.
Jobson Marangoni De Castro, 38, pleaded guilty to one count of interstate transportation of stolen property, a felony that carries a statutory maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison.
The crime took place in May 2023, when De Castro tricked a hotel employee into giving him a key to the victims’ room at a luxury hotel in Beverly Hills. While the victims were away having dinner, De Castro stole six suitcases belonging to them, containing jewelry, clothing, and accessories worth approximately $1.8 million.
The victims returned to their hotel room to discover all six of their suitcases were missing. The hotel staff then notified law enforcement about the theft.
De Castro then traveled to Miami and, on May 17, 2023, messaged a buyer on Instagram, selling the stolen jewelry and a luxury watch for $50,000. He claimed the items belonged to his late mother, but the buyer later discovered they were stolen.
De Castro has been in federal custody since August 2023. United States District Judge Hernán D. Vera has scheduled an April 30 evidentiary hearing to determine the loss amount. A sentencing hearing is expected to be scheduled in the following months.
The FBI and the Beverly Hills Police Department investigated this matter.
