Convicted Smuggler to Serve 27 Months in Prison

Joe Jones, Jr., a 24-year-old man from Georgia, has been handed a 27-month prison sentence for transporting illegal aliens across the United States. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Tom S. Lee in Jackson, Mississippi.

According to the court documents, Jones was being paid to drive a minivan full of illegal aliens from Louisiana to Georgia in June 2018. During a routine stop by a Mississippi Highway Patrol officer, 10 illegal aliens were found inside the van. Four of the individuals had previously been deported from the United States.

U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst praised the efforts of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Mississippi Highway Patrol in their investigation of the case. 'Their tireless work brought this smuggler to justice and ensured that those who put profits over people are held accountable,' Hurst stated.

The illegal aliens found in the van were from various countries, including Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. They were taken into custody by the authorities and are currently facing deportation proceedings.

The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of human smuggling and the importance of law enforcement's role in preventing it. As the courts continue to crack down on these crimes, it is essential that those who engage in this activity are brought to justice and face the consequences of their actions.
