Joel M. Cosey, Unauthorized Access Devices, Pennsylvania 2013

A Chicago man has been sentenced to 52 months imprisonment for a string of cybercrimes.

Joel M. Cosey, 27, was sentenced in a federal court in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for conspiracy, using unauthorized access devices in an aggregate amount of $1,000, possessing device-making equipment, and possessing 15 or more access devices.

Sr. United States District Judge Donetta W. Ambrose handed down the sentence, which is to be followed by 3 years supervised release.

The charges stem from an incident on August 9, 2013, when Cosey conspired, possessed device-making equipment, possessed 15 or more access devices, and used unauthorized access devices in an aggregate amount of $1,000.

Assistant United States Attorney Shardul S. Desai prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.

U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton commended the United States Secret Service for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Cosey.

The case highlights the growing threat of cybercrime in the United States.
