A Suring teacher has pleaded guilty to federal child sexual abuse charges, facing up to 30 years in prison.

John E. Fredenburgh, 37, of the Village of Suring, Wisconsin, pleaded guilty to traveling interstate with the intent to engage in a sexual act with a minor, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2423(b), and an additional count of using a computer to attempt to persuade, induce, or entice a minor to engage in unlawful sexual activity, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2422(b).

According to court records, Fredenburgh was employed as a substitute teacher with the Suring School District from December 2020 until his arrest in 2021.

The crime was investigated by the Oconto Sheriff's Office, the Oconto County District Attorney's Office, the Marinette County Sheriff's Office, the Menominee, Michigan Sheriff's Office, the Menominee (Michigan) Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel R. Humble.

As part of his plea agreement, Fredenburgh faces a sentence of at least ten years' imprisonment and up to 30 years' imprisonment when he is sentenced before Senior U.S. District Judge William C. Griesbach on March 14, 2022.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006, by the U.S. Department of Justice.

The initiative marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
