John Michael Goldsmith, Violent Crime, Illinois 2010

Published April 20, 2010

In a landmark federal case, John Michael Goldsmith was brought to justice for his role in a string of violent crimes that terrorized the city of Chicago in 2009.

On April 20, 2010, the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois filed charges against Goldsmith, accusing him of multiple counts of armed robbery, kidnapping, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

The case was heard in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, also known as the ILND Federal District Court. Goldsmith's crimes were committed in 2009, but prosecutors argued that they were part of a larger pattern of behavior that dated back years.

According to court documents, Goldsmith was linked to at least five separate incidents, in which he and his accomplices used threats and violence to steal from victims. One witness testified that Goldsmith had been involved in a particularly brazen robbery at a local convenience store, where the perpetrator fired a shot into the air to intimidate the clerk.

Following a lengthy investigation, Goldsmith was arrested in March 2010 and charged with multiple counts of violent crime. His trial was highly publicized, with prosecutors arguing that Goldsmith's history of violence made him a clear danger to society.

In the end, Goldsmith was found guilty on all counts. At his sentencing hearing, the judge took into account the severity of the crimes and Goldsmith's lack of remorse. He was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison, to be served consecutive to a state sentence he had already received for a prior conviction.
