John Moore, Carjacking, North Carolina 2010
Raleigh, North Carolina - In a shocking turn of events, a Chadbourn man has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for his involvement in a violent carjacking incident.
According to the United States Attorney's Office, John Moore, 22, was sentenced to 360 months imprisonment followed by five years supervised release by Chief United States District Judge James C. Dever III. The court's decision was a result of Moore's extensive and violent criminal history, as well as the violent acts he committed in this case.
The incident in question took place on March 1, 2010, when Moore broke into a residence in Evergreen, North Carolina. The victim, who was accompanied by a two-year-old grandchild, was forced to the ground at gunpoint, with Moore putting a gun to the victim's head. He then dragged the victim around the home by the hair, pulling them into a bedroom and duct-taping their hands and face.
Moore demanded money from the victim, who told him the cash was in the car. Moore dragged the victim outside and shot and killed the family dog, before dragging the victim back inside the house. He then threw the victim into a closet and ordered them not to leave, before eventually fleeing the scene with the family car.
This case was part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, which encourages federal, state, and local agencies to cooperate in a unified 'team effort' against gun crime. The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, and the Columbus County Sheriff's Office.
Assistant United States Attorneys Jane J. Jackson and Toby Lathan prosecuted the case, which resulted in Moore being convicted of carjacking, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2119, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a federal crime of violence, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 924(c). He also pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(g)(1).
Moore's sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violent crime, and the importance of continued cooperation between law enforcement agencies in the fight against gun crime.
The United States Attorney's Office has made it clear that it will continue to prioritize the prosecution of violent offenders, and the protection of communities from the scourge of gun crime.
