Gang Member Sentenced to 27 Years in Prison for 2009 Murder

A 17-year-old boy was brutally murdered in the Bronx in 2009, and now the gang member responsible has been sentenced to 27 years in federal prison.

Johnny Nunez Garcia, a member of the Dominicans Don't Play ('DDP') gang, was sentenced to 200 months in prison, plus an additional 124 months he had already served on prior narcotics and firearms offenses. Nunez Garcia was also sentenced to five years of supervised release.

Nunez Garcia was convicted of murdering Jonathan Ruiz, a 17-year-old boy, on June 5, 2009. According to the allegations, Nunez Garcia and his accomplices pursued Ruiz in a car after an altercation at a party in the Bronx. One of the gang members shot Ruiz from a distance, and then Nunez Garcia ran over to the wounded Ruiz and shot him again.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams praised the New York City Police Department for their work on the case, stating 'Today's sentence shows that senseless gang violence will be met with severe consequences.'

Nunez Garcia, 31, of the Bronx, New York, was previously a member of the 'Elder Family' set of the DDP gang, which distributed crack cocaine and carried out acts of violence in the Bronx.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Frank Balsamello and Adam Hobson handled the prosecution in the case.

The case is being handled by the Office's Violent and Organized Crime Unit.
